Cosplay on the Cheap

High school football is many things in a small Texas town.

Friday night lights,

Small town camaraderie,

A chance to eat junky concession stand food...

And, for one week out of the school year, a chance to see my husband look FABULOUS.

Homecoming week at the high school where my husband works has 'themes' for every day to build morale and school spirit. Students and teachers are encouraged to dress up and have fun with it.

Chris and I go to the thrift store the weekend before, load up on odds and ends, and take the week as a personal challenge to make the most over the top costumes with as little money as possible.

We've done it for the past four years or so, and I have to say, I think this is the best year yet.

Monday, theme: 'Millionaire Monday'

Participants were supposed to dress how a millionaire would dress.

So, naturally, we decided that he should dress as Tony Stark (Iron Man).

The end of a cottage cheese container painted with some black lines, lit with a super bright LED flashlight worn underneath a black T-shirt made a pretty decent arc reactor. Worn with jeans and tennis shoes, he was a very casual, yet charming, millionaire.

Tuesday, theme: 'Twin Tuesday"

Everyone was supposed to find a 'twin' to dress up identical to.

We decided to go a slightly different route.

A scar, an eyepatch, black clothes, and a German accent set apart Chris's brother, Egbert Val Hess, E. Val Hess for short.

We don't talk about him much, he's sort of the black sheep of the family.
Wednesday, theme: "Favorite Decade"

Rather than the 1920s or the 1950s, we decided to aim for the 730's.

This is the one that involved the most work for us. Chris and I worked together to make the horns on his helmet out of paper mache, the green under tunic is an over-sized sleeveless sheath dress we found at the thrift store, the over tunic is a blue bed sheet with a hole cut out of the middle and arranged with safety pins, he's got the whole thing cinched with a belt, and he's wearing brown dress boots. The ax he made himself with cardboard and foil, I made the shield with cardboard and duct tape (it's not visible in the picture, but the backside of the shield has a grid support system to keep it from flopping around).

The red beard is just naturally there.

Thursday, theme: "Twisted Thursday"

People were supposed to dress as their opposite.

Since Chris is a young man, we decided he needed to go as an old woman.

This one was actually really easy to put together.

We lucked into the cane and the dress at the thrift store...it's actually scary how well the dress fits him (the whole thing is one piece, it zips at the back). The bag we had in the kids' dress up box, the necklace is mine, and the glasses are his. We lightened up his hair with some corn starch before he left. He had a student who happens to be really good at stage makeup do up his face (I'm very grateful she agreed to do it-- I can't do makeup to save my life).

He spent the day hobbling through the halls with his cane, handing out Worther's hard candies from his bag. At one point, a student who decided to come dressed as a thug stole his purse, and he gave chase and then collapsed on the floor, "See here, you young ruffian...! Oh dear! I've fallen and I can't get up!"

Definitely the student favorite (and mine as well).

Friday, theme: "Green Out"

Every Friday, game day, during homecoming week is always the same; 'Green Out'. The students dress in the school color, green, and have a pep rally to show their support to the football team and to get them all hyped up for the game.

We've gradually been working on building a traditional costume that Chris can wear year to year for this one. We came up with the cape and the shirt last year. The cape is actually signed by all the members of the senior graduating class from last year, and they're the only ones who will ever get to sign it; Chris wanted them to have that privilege since they were the first class of students he had taught at that school.

The Darth Vader helmet is new this year. Chris spray painted it green himself. We were hoping to add  white paw prints (the school's mascot is the Bulldogs) and a few other small details to the helmet, but we just didn't have time. They'll have to be the new additions for next year.

So that was Homecoming 2019. I'm already looking forward to next year.
