XI- Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. For by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

There's an air of finality to this station.

Once He was fastened to the cross, the ordeal of carrying the cross was done, and the heavier ordeal of crucifixion was begun. The worst part, not only because it was more painful (and humiliating-- people were set up right by the city gates to die and Passover was a huge holiday weekend) but because it was an unknown how long it would last. We know He died in three hours, but we also know Pilate was surprised when he heard this because it was so quick. Often, it took people several hours, or even days to die.

For those who accompanied Him to this point, this must have been a punch in the gut. There was no way He could slip away or escape at this point: this was going to happen.

For Him, the final long, brutal stage of His Passion had begun.
